Welcome to the E-Com 9-1-1 Academy.
This months lesson is: The truth about mobile phones.
Cell phones are literally everywhere. In some places in the world the number of mobile phones outnumber traditional land lines 2 to 1. Several countries, including the UK now have more mobile phones than people. There will be over five hundred million cell phone users in China by 2015. The total number of mobile phone subscribers in the world was estimated at 2.14 billion in 2005. It is estimated that 80% of the world's population has mobile phone coverage by 2006. This figure is expected to increase to 90% by 2010
Here in the US, there are approximately 208 Million mobile subscribers, nearly two-thirds of the US popluation. This convenience can be a dangerous one though, as careless mobile phone use has proven to be an impediment to safe driving, and in fact can put drivers and pedestrians at risk of serious injury at the hands of someone too engrossed in their conversation to pay attention to the road.
There is another danger to be considered by those folks who jettison their landline in favor of their mobile. The ability to dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.
While the technology for locating handsets with a built-in GPS exists and works fairly well, it, unlike it's wired cousin, cannot provide a precise location or address in the event that 9-1-1 is dialed. When you dial 9-1-1 on your mobile phone, your call may not even go to the correct PSAP, or public safety answering point, for your location. Your call may go to another jursidiction, depending on your position relative to that of the nearest tower, who will then transfer it to the correct one, costing you precious minutes.
Anyone thinking of switching only to a cellular provider should think through all of the options before making this critical decision.
